Giannis Antetokounmpo's absence is set to shake up the Milwaukee Bucks' game plan for the next couple of weeks. Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers has announced that the team's star player, Giannis Antetokounmpo, is expected to be sidelined for approximately two weeks due to a groin strain. This news comes as a significant blow to the Bucks, given Antetokounmpo's stellar performance this season.
Antetokounmpo has been a dominant force, averaging an impressive 31.2 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 6.8 assists. His absence will undoubtedly be felt on both ends of the court.
Rivers shared the update on Bucks+ Audio’s “Courtside with Gale Klappa” podcast, offering some reassurance by stating that the injury isn't severe. “I don’t know what grade it is, but I know it’s not a bad one, so that’s good news for us,” Rivers said. However, the coach also noted that a two-week recovery period is likely.
The injury occurred during the second quarter of Monday night's game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, which the Bucks lost 118-106. Rivers mentioned that Antetokounmpo seemed to have experienced discomfort earlier in the game. “He grabbed his groin, I think in the first quarter, and I asked him right away,” Rivers recounted. “He said it was fine. Then I think he grabbed it again and said it was fine. And then on the third time, you know, that’s when it happened. But I think it happened before, in my opinion.”
But here's where it gets controversial: The Bucks are already facing other injury challenges. Kevin Porter Jr. hasn't played since the season opener due to a sprained ankle and recent meniscus surgery. Taurean Prince is out indefinitely with a herniated disk. Losing Antetokounmpo on top of these existing issues presents a significant hurdle for the team.
The Bucks, who had a strong start to the season winning four of their first five games, have struggled recently, losing six of their last ten games, including three of their last four. They'll need to regroup quickly as they begin a three-game homestand, starting Thursday against the Philadelphia 76ers.
And this is the part most people miss: The Bucks' ability to maintain their competitiveness during Antetokounmpo's absence will be crucial. The team will need other players to step up and fill the void. This situation could also lead to strategic adjustments by Coach Rivers, who will need to find new ways to leverage the team's strengths.
