Burnaby's SkyTrain Expo Line Transformed: 5km LED Light Installation Complete! (2025)

Burnaby's SkyTrain Expo Line gets a vibrant, programmable LED light installation

The 5-km-long LED light installation along the SkyTrain Expo Line in Burnaby is now complete, transforming a major east-west public space and active transportation route. This project, which began nearly four years ago, has enhanced the safety and visibility of the area, while also adding a touch of magic to the city's infrastructure.

The City of Burnaby's BC Parkway Illumination Project involved installing programmable LED lights on the pillars supporting the SkyTrain guideway. The result is a stunning, continuous lighting installation spanning 5 km between Patterson Station and Edmonds Station. This not only illuminates the pillars but also the underside of the guideway, creating a rainbow-like effect.

The first phase of the project was installed in late 2021 between Willingdon Avenue and Metrotown Station. Since then, the City's contracted crews have progressively installed more segments of the lighting system. By early 2023, the entire 5 km stretch from Patterson to Edmonds stations will be fully illuminated.

The lighting serves a dual purpose: it improves nighttime visibility and public safety along the BC Parkway's walking and cycling route, and it also contributes to Burnaby's civic pride. The lights can be dynamically programmed to change colors, celebrating seasonal themes and special occasions, similar to the special lighting of major landmarks and structures in the region. The public and organizations can even submit lighting requests.

The project cost approximately $13 million, with $3.2 million reallocated from the budget for the new Highway 1 pedestrian and cycling overpass. Burnaby also plans to make major improvements to the design and function of the BC Parkway between Central Park's Kingsway edge and Royal Oak Station. There may also be public transit-specific changes to the BC Parkway around Metrotown Station, as TransLink considers upgrading the bus exchange.

The City of Richmond and Coquitlam have also installed special lighting for their respective Canada Line and Millennium Line extensions, setting an example for Burnaby's innovative approach to urban lighting and public space enhancement.
