Abstract

Through a diverse series of photographs, this chapter looks at the life of Princess Alexandrine Irene of Prussia (1915–1980), called “Adini,” who had Down syndrome. The chapter contrasts the life of this princess to the historical prejudice and isolation a person with a developmental disability might experience even though, and perhaps even because, they were born into a family of great wealth and status. The surprising case of this princess brings to light a forgotten history that allows the author to consider other representations of individuals with developmental disabilities.
